Fortified and Green Building Projects
Since 2009, Habitat for Humanity of Baldwin County has been focusing it's efforts on building homes that are more energy efficient, better for the environment and lead to lower insurance rates for the homeowners. At the latter part of 2009, our first Green Build home was completed. In June of 2010, Habitat dedicated it's first Fortified...for Safer Living home, a concrete structure that will hold up much better to strong winds. Click here to read about the entire Habitat project, "The Fortified Experiment". This three phase project will allow Habitat to compare a number of green and fortified build alternatives to choose the most effective and cost efficient environmentally friendly and safe building practices. The goal of this experiment is to assist Habitat homeowners in decreasing high property insurance premiums. The information gathered will also be shared with the local insurance and builder industry to offer alternatives to residents in Baldwin County who struggle with high property insurance premiums.
